Muslim Voices Over the Seas: The Quest for God

This monograph envisages to present a medley of narratives and oral literature from the Tausug and Sama, Muslim ethnic groups of the Sulu archipelago, and underline the local character of their religious life. Their blending the new and the old, the local traditions and universal creeds, they developed a lived Islam that suited their cultures. Normative or “scriptural Islam” naturally plays a role with which the local people have learned to negotiate. Their indigenous literature reflects this blending process and quest for a “local” rather than an Arab Islam.

The research phase on the collection of the materials from various Tausug and Sama sources is almost completed. The author already has rough drafts of two chapters and expects eight more. The volume is estimated to be about 350 pages and the final manuscript will be ready by 2005.

The Ateneo de Manila University Press has shown some interest in the project but no final funding agency/sponsor yet.
